Marin Director of Health and Human Services
CHALLENGE: Marin Health and Human Services (HHS) is the County’s largest department with more than 700 employees across multiple locations around the county. Its integrated department offers public health, social services, and behavioral wellness. When the head of HHS announced his retirement, the County needed a search firm that specialized in health and human services to create a recruitment strategy that supported their employee and stakeholder engagement philosophy and culture.
ACTIONS: To meet the County’s desire to involve community-based partners, staff, executives, and elected officials, WBCP’s team designed and implemented an integrated engagement strategy, which included surveys, interviews, and community meetings. These meetings provided a participatory, transparent and engaged process, allowing WBCP to gain insight into the County and Department’s needs, culture and ideal candidate profile. Interviews were conducted over a two day process with five panels that included union, staff, executive management, elected officials, community-based partners.
RESULTS: WBCP conducted a nationwide search yielding 69 applicants and several remarkable candidates. Through WBCP’s strategic vision, marketing plan, and guided leadership, the County Board of Supervisors hired Dr. Grant Colfax, a physician and the former HIV/AIDS advisor to the Obama Administration. Dr. Colfax brings a combination of health policy, leadership, and community engagement experience, fulfilling the County’s criteria.
